Hi all, Probably a really dumb question for the experienced internet savvy, but in all fairness Im new to this side of things...and probably in the 'dumb' category. OK, so Im paying for a VPS account with Jaguar PLC and want to host my website with them. Im using Plesk and have no problems here, as I have done this before. I had previously registered the domain name that I wanted with whois.com earlier in the year. Now how the hell do you tie the two together? I just want to type www.mydomainname.com into google and there you have my website. Now Jaguar have provided me two name servers and three I.P. addresses. I have gone to my Whois control panel and clicked update nameservers and the I get an error telling me the nameservers do not exist. Ive tried entering the IP addresses instead and get an error telling me this is in the incorrect format. So I contacted Whois and they tell me those NameServers do not exist and I should contact my host Jaguar. I contacted Jaguar and they tell me I need to first register those IP addresses with my registrar (Im assuming this is Whosi where I registered the name). email after email to each company is telling me nothing other than its the other one to blame. Can anyone help me out of this endless hole?! Thanks in advance for anyone who can.
Ok, lets fix you up Firstly you need to check and see where the domain is currently pointing - By using the tool at iptools.com " Whois Lookup " Your domain registrar manages where your domain is pointed, You can maintain your nameserver/dns settings at your registrar's control panel - Your registrar will allow you to " Register " private nameservers, this is NOT your normal assigning of nameservers to your domain, this is a feature within your registrars domain control panel which allows you to create NEW nameservers, this feature will require you to enter IP's for your nameservers. Using your plesk control panel you will need to create an account, and your nameservers. Get help from your DC on creating nameserver dns records ( and assigning DNS Nameserver IP's in plesk ). Once you have configured your domain registrars control panel - private nameservers - NS1.domain.com -> 1.1.1.1 for example - The nameservers will then be active within a few hours. This is the good part - Now you can point your domains, to your private nameservers which are now pointing to your server - e.g ns1.domain.com & ns2.domain.com
Hey SSANZ I really appreciate the information. I believe my site/server is entirely set up through Plesk. Most informative and I believe the issue resides with my registrar. Currently the site is pointing to the following: Name Server: DNS1.PARKING-PAGE.NET Name Server: DNS2.PARKING-PAGE.NET I registered with whois.com actually, and cannot find any option anywhere at in the control panel to register private nameservers. Do I need to pay for this facility at all?
