Is there discrimination for the way search engines rank .com, .org, .info and .net? Which tends to rank higher?
No discrimination. The only thing about these domains is that Google does not associate them with particular countries...
I do not have any personal experience which suggest so, hence I do believe that search engines treat all domains at par. Of course using totally irrelevant tlds like.... org or edu for commercial site, would not be looked kindly...imo Regards, RightMan
Leaving out the .info I think all the rest are ok for G. User preferences to .com in general are whole different thing though
Maybe you can explain why wikipedia.org ranks so well in google search results? If you do a google search for "charity", just about every result one the first page is a .org and most of the results on page 2 are a .org. If you do a google search for the word church, the first 2 results are .org - wikipedia.org and lds.org. .org is supposed to be reserved for not for profit organizations. Most people are looking for businesses, so the .whatever may show up first. But when you go looking for not for profit topics, such as charities and religions, .org ranks very well.
Ranking wise there is no difference. But each extension generally is suppose to carry certain meaning.
Google is generally TLD agnostic (they could care less which TLD you use). Other than the country specific TLDs, all have an equal chance of ranking. The only prejudice is in peoples perceptions of what those TLDs mean. People are more likely to click on .com's in general... probably .net's next... unless they are specifically looking for non-profits or informational sites in which case they might be more likely to click on a .org.
