Domain Privacy outside of registar

not sure if this makes sense but is it possible to buy domain privacy other than where your name is registered. Seems like there might be a company that would give you blanket privacy protection for all your names.

Not that I know of. I am pretty sure that can only be done at the registrar level.

Technically anybody can do it for you. Even me. But legally the name that shows in the WHOIS is the legal owner of the domain. You have to trust the person or company you are transferring ownership to. People do it through their registrar because they trust their registrar - but it is still a side agreement between you and your registrar and has nothing to do with Verisign or ICANN.

what i was thinking is you leave your name but a companies address and phone number......so they forward any messages to you.

After all just a name is often anonymous unless you have a rare name.

Seems to me there would be a market for this service.

You can get that in the same place you have registered your domain name with.

yes the problem is its 8.99 per domain, I was thinking that it was a niche for a company that would replace at least your phone# and address of say all your names for $5 or something

You wont find any companies doing it. It can only be done at registrar level, legally.

dun think any other company provides it separately..its usually sold as an add on with a domain..plus its normally the Registrar who has control over it and theres no field from where you can activate or de-activate the private whois service..so you have it if the Registrar has it, or dont

ok, I was just trying to figure out a way out of godaddy $8.99 privacy protection. Can't see paying that I guess I may as well transfer to another registar with free privacy protect for 8.99 I can atleast get a year extension.
Still think there is a market there but not sure anyone understands what i'm talking about

An alternative is to rent a post office box. It's cost effective if you have many domains. You can also cheaply register a DBA ("doing business as") name in your county and get a free phone number from someone like grandcentral.com

Well I understand some places offer it free or for very little but when you have one of the biggest godaddy.com charging $8.99 per domain for just privacy protection, yes I think there is a market for it . Is that hard to understand that people paying $8.99 might be willing to pay $2 per domain instead?

True but I really do not have enough domains as I just do it as a hobby.

But it seems like you are talking about a market which does not exist, there is a market yes but only in registrar level.. And most of the free private registrations are just for the first year ;) If you think logically why should someone give you something for free? does that make any sence? Everything has a cost

I'm not sure you understand the basic thing I'm talking about. I'm simply saying if you could provide something less than $8.99 there is a market. If something doesn't exist there is a market.

You would not be providing full privacy just giving a address and phone number to use as contact info just in the same way people rent mail boxes, they do that you know right? to me my address and phone number are the things I want private, your name is not that important, this would be different from full privacy protection as provided by domains where even your name is not displayed. Whether its within the guidelines to do that is another question.

Well, may be I can try to run a service something like that, may be it would be interesting.. If I keep the price at lowest rate and provide emailadress: yourdomain@...... for masking your email which will forward the domain into your email adress..
