What would happen to the ownership of a domain if the registrar went bankrupt, or closed its doors for business? Curious.
When they apply to become a registrar, ICANN requires each registrar to declare another Registrar which would take over their domains if they became insolvent. In a bankruptcy, it is possible that another Registrar could bid on the business and wind up taking over the accounts- so it is possible the Registrar that was originally listed might not wind up with the business, but ICANN has safeguards set up to make sure you don't lose your domain.
Thanks for that info mjewel. I was sure there was safegaurds of some sort through ICANN but was wondering what they were.
Is it safe to assume that any of the top 10 registrars will probably not go out of business in the next few (5~10) years? GoDaddy, eNom, Registerfly, network solutions, etcetera. I plan on renewing some domains for the long term (9~10 years) with GoDaddy in particular.
Hello everyone. I've wanted to join this forum but forgotten numerous times, so I'd better drop in while the idea's fresh in my mind. I guess it's safe to assume that. Enom and Network Solutions have both been acquired by their respective parties, and Go Daddy will continue to find ways to make money anyway without the kind of leverage the other 2 have. One case that comes to mind about this is the Dodora-DirectI incident. Just google around for it.
