Domain or subdomain?

    Hi,

I have news site (portal like) with strong link popularity and now I'm going to try few others topics. I have 2 choices. First is setup new site on subdomain (topic.site.com) and get links from site.com navigation bar. Second is setup new site on new domain (site-for-topic.com) and get links from site.com in footer (for example).

    What's the best choice?

    Thank you in advance :)

If your site is already popular, then I would think that making subdomains would be a fine solution. This way the subdomains can be branded with your main site and you don't have to purchase new domains either.

If the topics are somewhat related to your main site and you have traffic on your main site then a subdomain will be better IMO.

mixke, well portal sites often have unrelated topics
for example yahoo.com and http://astrology.yahoo.com/astrology/. But this is big site :) is there any example of successful using of subdomains for small/medium sites ?

Creating a blog with your subdomain would be better as it will help you in SEO.

I agree with the other DP members. A website under a subdomain would be much better in terms of costs. :D

If those topics aren't really related to your news site and you got alot of content for those other topics, give them their own domain....otherwise, use subdomains.

One thing I wouldn't do: Link to those topics pages from your news site. It's not required for getting the positive effects of a subdomain on a popular domain, and you could hurt your domain by doing so.
