    I come across them time to time. I'll enter a url trying to check quickly if a domain is taken (not having to go to a whois site). And there will just be a page that says: Lease this domain for $500/year, check out our other domains available for lease at this url: www.ourdomainleasewebsite.com. I think there is one big company that does this as I have ran into the same exact page format, fonts, and wording many many times just by entering random urls.

    Buying = Leasing

    Since you pay a annual fee for buying a domain, so you're not actually buying it, but just leasing it out.

    One that I found that leases it is purple.com (might be too expensive for you).

    Basically domain names (1 word .com for example, or good dictionary words) are getting so rare that the owners would rather lease the domain to you rather then rent it.

    That way they earn money, while keeping the domain. And you get to look like you own the domain, while making money too (hopefully).

    Basically then you would set up a hosting account, and I (let's say I was leasimg my domian) would point my domain to the nameservers of the host.

    But you would never have access to the domain at the registrar. I would because it's my domain. And you would pay the owner monthly, yearly or whatever.

    I hope that explains the concept.
