Domain Names: keywords or brand/product name?

What are your thoughts on selecting domain names? When do you use keywords and when do use brand/product names?

My current situation is below if you are able to provide advice, but I figured I’d also try to open the discussion up with a more general question.

I am building a new website for an old open source online multiplayer game that currently has a very poor, non optimized website that ranks for nothing other than its name. The admin of the current domain is completely inactive/doesn't care and no one else has access to fix the problems.

Player numbers are getting low and ranking as fast as possible is needed. I am well aware of the new domain penalty so I am trying to get the website started immediately. So, my first instinct was to use a keyword based domain name. However it does make a relatively long domain name, free[game type]game.com, and would not look as professional as using [name]game.com. I think it might be easier to get the attention of game websites/bloggers with a more professional domain, but harder to rank fast for the keywords I would otherwise have in the domain.

    Thanks!
