While the "-" allows the search engines to index each word separately "my website" instead of "mywebsite"it is unlikely to give you a massive search engine boost.

In that case - you really don't want people scratching their heads and having to ask - ok do I put the dash here? or here?

    for search engines:

according to a google spokesperson during a lecture at the WordCamp 2007 convention, using "-" symbols to seperate words is recommended, underscores "_" are much worse as not all search engines would read this as a word seperator.

you can see the video here:
    http://www.seo-advies.com/2007/09/05/video-van-lezing-matt-cutts-google-over-seo-wordpress-blogs/
(the site is in dutch but the video in english)

    for people:
people might mistake and try without the dash... so in this aspect it's really what's most logical...

I guess it's more important for the naming of your html files than it is for your site name itself.

I'd think the - would give you more control over what words google separates in results for bolding / ranking. Without the dash they may make a word combo between words in your domains that you don't want.

    Just a thought.

It is better without the dashes because it is easier to remember.

having a site like my-new-web-site is terrible
and for Goog where you can most of the traffic from is a waste of time.

    Good SEO is not these-are-my-keywords.com

It does not matter also if it consists of 3 words
like word-word-word (as very few people type it ) you would not have to bother about typos as well.

Not being an expert SEO, I have to listen to those who know, and I was told that Google is giving preference to those sites WITHOUT the dashes (-) since they tend to be older. If you notice, he tends to be correct. Most of the better positioned sites have domains without the dash.

    Makes sense???
