hi, i have a domain name and a webhosting package under some host. im planning to get a new domain name with godaddy, but im still going to use the webhost that im with right now ( meaning i will use my new domain that i bought from godaddy and transfer it and use it with that webhost ) what will happen if that webhost close down? does that mean i wont have access to my domain names anymore?? cause the one that i currently bought from them i have no info to it whatsoever thanks
Hi, Register your domain name with GoDaddy, but do not transfer it to your web host, just set the "Name Servers". This means that your hosting will point to them, but you have full control over the domain name incase they shut down. Jay
When you signup for a webhost and they register a domain for you the domain is registered under the hosting company,if you use godaddy it is registered to your name and you have full DNS control meaning that you can point the domain name at any server you wish and make changes to any records. So if your host dies you will just need to change your DNS nameservers so they point to a new server/webhost and in 24-48 hrs your domain will be live on the new server. If the host registered the domain you cant move it as they may have locked it. Ive lost a domain to this when i moved hosts, but you can always try to buy the domain from them.
thanks guys..i have a domain name right now that i've purchased under a host and i was wondering if i can transfer that to godaddy or something? or anything that will keep my domain name? cause im planning to cancel my webhosting with that host next month, im getting a new domain name from godaddy but i still want to keep the one i have now. thanks
Yes, you can transfer your domain to GoDaddy if you can get the Authorization code from your current webhost. Jay
