Hello everyone, I will share some context first: I am a web developer first, a web designer second and I like creating illustrations and short stories. To showcase all of that, I am doing a basic personal site development. Now, I want to decide on what domain to buy. (Please note, I am not looking at commercial aspects of the same. I want a basic available domain. The topic: My name is Arpit, I like coding and designing. So naturally I was thinking of going for domain names related to my name. Something like Iamarpit.com but I realise that while "Arpit" in my native tongue means "A gift", most English speaking people tend to misread it as "Armpit" which cannot be a good idea in the long term, right? So I thought of something like "DesiDev.in" meaning Desi - as in Indian and Dev as in Developer. A pretty short reach nationalist name I suppose and not sure about what sort of impression it will give. Another interesting idea was to go for something like iAmArp.it. But does an .it domain makes sense for an Indian developer since it is an Italian domain? Or am I thinking too much on this. Should I go for something simple like meetarpit.com or something? What do you guys think and do you have any suggestions? Thank you
I would avoid anything with 'arpit' in it as you rightly observe the first thing the English world would think is 'armpit' and that is probably not how you want to be known.
They make a RIGHT GUARD, but do not make a LEFT GUARD. Don't deodorant manufacturers realize that we humans have 2 armpits?....... Like duhhh!
You can probably get away with Arpit so long as there isn't an "m" so "meetarpit" is ok while "iamarpit" isn't. If you have any plans to hire other developers then avoid your first name - but your surname needs to be short and easily pronounced. I'll remember a name if I can say it, even if I've got it wrong. I just googled a list of the 30 most common surnames in India and all would pass my pronounceable test but think about who your target market are - they may have had less exposure to "foreign" names.
My surname is 8 letters long. It's "Aggarwal" and the word probably would like some jumbled letters to someone who hasn't heard it before. So not considering it. Was thinking of just using "AP" for Arpit and do something like apcodez, apdesigns or something on those lines.
Thanks for going through the efforts. I was considering your points only. To my circle in India iAmArpit sounds good but I want to attract foreign clients too. meetarpit sounds good too. Will check for availability.
