Domain Name Strategy for SEO

Hi, I would like to get advise from real seo-experts.

I am building a travel & hotel review site and want to concentrate on one specific region first with SEO. Let's say as example the holiday region I want to have high se rankings for is Cancun.
So I will do everything possible to rank high for cancun (backlinks, writing a travel guide for good content etc....)

Later when I have achieved my goal (this may be in 1 or 2 years) I want to start with the next holiday region and so on...........

For me it is very important to start with the right domain strategy from the beginning, so I have the following options to start with:

    mytripreview.com/cancun
This may be good as the main domain will get credit from backlinks in the future, but I guess it's more difficult to rank high for cancun, as this is not the main domain name.

    cancuntripreview.com
This may be the best to get ranking for cancun, but when I want to start with a new region, I need a complete new domain name and start again from the beginning.

    cancun.mytripreview.com
This may work well, but the question is: If you put lots of backlinks to this subdomain and get high rankings, will the next subdomain (for example: hawai.mytripreview.com benefit from these backlinks or do I have to start again from the beginning.

    Thanks for your advise!
    Andy

In all honesty, I would go for cancuntripreview.com and start fresh when you are ready to work on a new site.

I have never had a huge amount of luck with Subdomains, I see them as just making things more messy than they should be, but each to their own with that.

Also, I am sure that there will be a ton of things that you would like to focus on about Cancun, and these keywords will more than likely go fairly deep. I think this is just from personal preferance, each option would be doable, but I would honestly sit tight with the second option, and greate individual businesses from that same concept. Could be worth more for you in the long run, it also really narrows down your niche for that one site as well, which means that it automatically becomes a much more profitable idea for you.

The more work that you put into each concept, the better the rewards.

If you are building a niche website I suggest use an exact match domain name with your targeted keyword, if Cancun trip review is your keyword cancuntripreview.com is always better choice followed by content relevant to Cancun trips.

Thanks for your honest advice. Looks like I really have to focus on the niche-strategy, as it would be almost impossible to compete in rankings with tripadvisor.com or expedia.com etc...

The most interesting fact is, that I found another very simple done travel guide, with very little backlinks, but with a lot of unique info about the holiday region, that is ranking on top for many important search terms, just after less than 1 year. That's amazing.
