    Look at the wording in the screenshot posted above-- they clearly state, "true or not" regarding their quote of Google's patent. Obviously, they're utilizing this to sell longer registrations, but I think they've covered their bases, and I wouldn't consider it an underhanded tactic.

    Wow. You are correct, muchacho - I didn't think it actually said that in that patent application.

    On the other hand, note the "for example" part of that - that doesn't indicate that Google is using or ever intends to use that as a marker of longevity and for reasons stated earlier I do not believe they are naive enough to actually implement anything that easily "spoofed".

    In fact, of all the people who now have gone to 10 year registrations since that application was filed (a long time ago now, by the way - see below), I wonder what percentage of them are scam popup sites or porn sites?
