When I do a whois of one of my domains, this odd bit confuses me.

It sounds like I cannot renew or transfer my domain. Is this legal?

    Registrar: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (R91-LROR)
Status: CLIENT DELETE PROHIBITED, CLIENT RENEW PROHIBITED, CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED, CLIENT UPDATE PROHIBITED

ha ha it's not any issue. Your domain is locked, and you can unlock it from GoDaddy's domain manager. To renew, you don't need to unlock, but to transfer your domain, you need to unlock first.

Yes, you have to unlock it! I had the same problem with one of my domains! :)

You can't transfer your domain unless you unlock. Locking is for domain security.
So that none other than you can transfer it.
