I am looking into purchasing a Domain name that is currently owned. It comes due in 2-3 months however what is the best way to take it from that person. It is not a parked domain or anything just not used so I'm thinking they won't renew. Any tips would be appreciated.

If it's unpopular word you can contact them and just say that it's one of domain names that you think about and you would like to buy it. Suggest quite low price (I don't now the name of domain so I can't suggest exact price). Then you will get the answer. Maybe person will raise price a bit. If it will be too high, just reply them that you won't buy it and you have found better name. Otherwise, just make a deal. That's all. I don't think owner will renew domain after knowing that you don't want the domain so you could buy it after expiring.

Some registrars offer a backorder service where you can place an order to register the domain when & if it comes available. GoDaddy does, others probably do.

try to contact the owner and lowball, you will have some room for the price increase. could be harder to get the domain in the aftermarked, if expired..

If you can't get in contact with the current domain owner your best bet will be to get multiple backorders through the different services such as: snapnames.com, godaddy.com, namejet.com, etc. It also depends where the domain name is currently registered as some registrars like Godaddy, will try to auction the name off before it goes through redemption.

How often do domains just expire and you can buy them?

well depends on the name.com lets say its a good domain which is worth $100-$200 in reseller market, chances are they are back ordered by 1000 domainers and it goes to auction before deletion

so its better if you offer the owner

    well just go to Whois.sc

type in the domain , there would be the contact unless he uses privacy , the best way is to start from your price minimum lets say you can pay $300 for it, you send a offer of $90 , then if he is interested to sell , probably some big numbers, then just do the same thing , lets say if he settles for less than $300 its good for you, if he at end settles for $300 good for both parties, if he isnt really looking to sell at that price , then you should look for other domain
