have you pointed your nameservers (at your domain registrar) to the dns addresses provided by your host?

also, is there an index file in your root directory?

dns isn't showing up for that domain from here.

I went to whois.net and this is what I have:

    No match found for 'fairdesigns.net'.

Please click here to register it.

Doesn't look like your domain registration went through.

fairdesigns.net is not registered. Check it at http://betterwhois.com. Comes up available.

You need to register the domain.

It sounds that you registered a website, not a domain name. That is, your hosting company configured their web server to respond to this domain name when it's submitted by the browser. flawebworks is right, this domain comes up as available any way you look at it.

The domain name is *not* registered. Three whois' tell me this: my 2 and the other guys. You only set up a hosting account; you did not register the domain name. You need to register it with a registrar. http://domainmonger.com is good; but not the cheapest out there.

You can register a domain name with Verio for $9.95/yr (http://www.verio.net/hosting/shared/dnr/). Talk to your hosting company, though - if they provide this service, this would give you one point of contact for support and may be a bit cheaper (many hosting companies give discounts on domain name registration).

Keep in mind, though, that buying a domain name is a roulette - while you are trying to save a few bucks, somebody may just buy it.

To fill you in a little bit better on what to expect since you are new to this:

    1) You need to worry about DNS.
DNS is the service that associates your website IP Address (something like 192.168.1.2) to your website name (www.fairsomething.net)
Your hosting provider that you paid already may provide this service at no additional charge. They may also charge you something in the neighborhood of a few bucks a month for the service. If you are going to use them, you will need their "nameserver" addresses. This is usually in the form of ns1.hostingcompany.com and ns2.hostingcompany.com - you will need at least 2. Otherwise, you will need to use another provider. Some registrars provide this service at no additional cost. www.stargateinc.com is one of them. Otherwise, there is a free solution out there, but off the top of my head, I don't remember the name. Google for "free dns" and I'm sure you will find them. My input would be to let your host handle it. DNS isn't that complicated, but with your level of experience you'll be better served to learn about other things for now.

    2) You will need to set up some contacts - a technical contact (probably your web host), a billing contact (you), and an administrative contact (again probably you).

    3) You can pay as much or as little as you want for a domain name. Google your registrar beforehand just to check if there are a ton of complaints about them. Stay away from Network Solutions. They've screwed me like no tomorrow twice.

    4) It will take usually 72 hours to propogate your domain name. Usually I see the results myself within a day, but friends of mine still can't get to it from other places. Any time you make changes to your DNS, prepare for the fact that people will be going to the old address for a period of time.

Most likely what happened is that you inadvertantly selected an option when signing up that said you already had a website. If you contact the host, they will probably be able to resolve the situation easily, but there may be a change in cost. I would expect that if you are unhappy they should provide you with a refund promptly since there is no way for you to have utilized their service to this point.

If you use domainmonger, go to http://www.domainmonger.com/services/register_domain_names.html

Scroll down to the green box that says register.
Type in your desired domain name and click go. A search starts.
    Click add to cart.
Click proceed to checkout. (upper right)
The next screen gives you several options/check boxes; click no box but do click the proceed button.
Choose from the dropdown box how many years you want to register the domain.

You should be fine from there.
