What would you insure it for?

I mean, what could go wrong that isn't caused by the owners neglect? I guess someone else could make a copyright infringement claim, do you mean insure against that?

Yeah I dont think anything could possibly go wrong with the domain name unless the domain is neglected by the owner.

Sometimes domains get stolen. Sometimes it's difficult to get them back. Sometimes it may even be impossible to get them back. Then insurance may be worthwhile. But I don't believe there is insurance for domains. Anyway you can almost always get them back after being stolen, even though it may take years. I guess you could get insurance for lost revenue during that time.

Since celebrities insure their body parts, I guess any insurance is possible if you approach the right company.

thats a interesting point, revenue possibly being covered while domain name is stolen , coz the time domain doesnt work owner would start facing losses which could be covered with domain insurance if its available !

The problem with domain insurance, is that it is hard to price correctly (i.e. come up with a good mathematical model). That's probably why big companies have stayed away from this.

Also, I'm guessing that 99% of domains are not worth the insurance; whereas the top 0.5% are big enough to have a legal department to fight fraud. Thus, you're left with a relatively small middle market.

As a proxy, consider getting legal insurance - this may be the biggest cost you will face.

At the end of the day, if you're working with big registrars (GoDaddy, NS, etc.) and your domain gets stolen, they will fight for you, because their publicity and business are at stake (it goes without saying that if you have valuable domains, pay more to keep them with a brand name registrar). As long as you notice the fraud right away, the success rate of getting the domain back is very high.

    Hope this helps.
