    Hi Everyone,

When marketing your site for seo puposes does it matter which domain name extension you have ? do .com rank better than .net, .org domain names ?

Domain extension do not matters when it comes to search results ranking.

Domain extension do matter when we talk about search results for specific location (country).

So if I have a .co.uk extension then that site should rank well in the uk/ireland verses the US because its a .co.uk extension ?

I think .info are treated as spammy sites. You might want to stay clear of those
.ca .us .to .net .org .com .co.uk all seem to do well as far as Ive seen.

as far as TLD's no, it does not matter is the answer you will get most often. Most likely true although i could swear my .org seems easier to rank. i think there may be some truth to it but cant quantify it. That is all a seperate issue to ccTLD's though (country code domains) where all things being equal you would only rank well in that particular country... eg .co.uk would rank easier in google.co.uk vs. google.com although it is possible to overcome that deficiency.

I wrote a SEO tutorial about this that touches on these issues a month or two ago, you can find it on my SEO blog if you want.

That's a human perception. I've seen plenty of .info sites that rank well, so the search engines obviously aren't treating it as a spammer's domain haven.

All else being equal (which they are in reality), those top level domains still won't rank higher because of a special bonus or modifier. What's really causing those types of TLDs to be so good is quality content and a LOT of links pointing back to them, whether from other pages on those sites, links from other sites, or both (both is usually the case).

When you are targeting particular business region at that time extension name matters.
If your business is limited to australian region than you need to choose .com.au will help you to get better rank in local se, like wise for each and every country...

Not just better ranked, but to actually appear in the local search results.
