No domain name extension (TLD) means very little these days. Once upon a time it used to help with geo targeting but now its more important where your server is located and telling Google in webmaster tools what geo location you want to target.

Once upon a time these TLD's would naturally do better in search engines: .org .edu .mil .gov

As you could not buy them or access them very easy, unfortunately even these mean very little these days as you can buy .org

Students often have access to .edu domains and abuse them.

Even .gov sites are not so important these days as .gov sites have realised they can make good money from marketing with these domains.
