Domain Name Effectiveness

Has a direct correlation between pithy/keyword-oriented domain names and search engine rank been well established?

More specifically, assuming that all other variables are identical (content, SEO optimization, etc.), does a well established/succinct domain name (e.g. myproductkeywords.info) achieve better search engine ranks over a less specific URL (productkeywords.wordpress.org/blahblah/)?

Thanks in advance for any clarification!

Having keywords in a domain name can help rank for terms with a low volume or a not so competitive term. Therefore the domain is not as important as the content quality and off site seo.
