Ok, so I was thinking the other day, if I wanted a domain name and it was gone. Lets say computer for example. Couldn't I but com-puter.com or compu-ter.com and the big G would still read it as computer.com ???

Thoughts? Maybe I am way off base here.

Advantages: available (since no one else wants it)

Disadvantages: google reads the - like a space so does not count as a keyword
    looks sketchy to human users
    no resale value

Safer to go with a multi-word .com that makes sense or look at other extensions such as .cc or .us ect

Google has a lot of improvement on the domain keyword analysis and I think Google will see your preferred keywords in both with and without using dash in domain. However, I would not recommend you to register a domain like this. It would be looking suspicious for common visitors, plus no trust towards the domain. This could mean you would get a much less chance for being clicked via search results, or do purchase anything on your website.

In addition to what has been said before... domain names with dashes are harder to read (especially in your example) and make it more complicated if one wanted to tell someone else about the domain name orally. Plus... it just looks ugly :/
