Every computer or web server attached to the internet has an IP address (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) this is much like you house address and each IP address is unique to that server or company. The problem with IP addresses is that they are complicated to remember and clunky to use. So some bright spark came with the Domain Name System, where by there are central DNS servers that all web sites must register with. These hold a list of the IP addresses along with a registered domain name. When you type in www.digitalpoint.com in to your browser address bar, it runs off to one of these DNS servers and checks the name, the DNS server then tells it the IP address it needs and your computer then heads off to the page. So for example www.digitalpoint.com is actually 216.9.35.56 So you could in the address bar type: http://216.9.35.56 and it would bring you to the same as www.digitalpoint.com

Maybe be a reseller first, get used to what problems you may encounter and what customers want. This way anything seriously problematic, you can just ask your upstream provider for help. Once you're experienced, then you can go dedicated or even colocated. This means owning your own hosting servers, and takes a lot of skill and effort!
