    • Branding for your website. This can contains word which is not in the dictionary, like Yahoo or Google.
    • Search Engine Optimization for your website. By using keywords on your domain name, you can have higher rank for the keyword in Search Engine Result Page (SERP). If you want to build a website on mortgage, you can create a website using the name homemortgagedeal.com.
    • Targeting a specific niche for Google Adsense. By choosing homemortgagedeal.com domain name, your website will probably shows mortgage or real estate ads.

Here are tips on choosing domain name:

    • Know what is your goal. Is it branding or SEO? If is for branding, choose short name domain, and easy to remember. If you are for the SEO, put keyword(s) on your domain name.
    • Choose dot com (.com) domain. Most people will type .com for default.
    • Use short and easy to spell domain name.
    • Use your company name or product name as your domain name.
    • If you are planning to branding your domain name, buy mispelled name too. Also buy another extensions to protect your brand like .net, .info, .biz
    • Do not use hyphen for your domain name. Many people will forgot to It’s easy to forget the hyphens when typing a name.
    • Dont use too much words on your domain, maximum three. So don’t go with besthomemortgagedeal.com (4 words).

I'm writing a book- the book's name url is already taken,
it is acceptable to use hyphens in the url or use a url relating to the theme of the book? I really don't want to change the book's name.

    Advantages using hyphens

-It is easier to read in print like in business card. So hyphens is better for offline promotions. Just compare these two: homemortgagedeal.com or home-mortgage-deal.com
-Hyphenated domain names works better for search engine. Although current search engine technology has impoved much, they can be confused. Homemortgagesnow.com can mean “home mortgage snow” or “home mortgages now“.

    Disadvantage using hyphens
-It is hard to say. If you are on radio and your domain is home-mortgage-deal.com, you need to say “home hyphen mortgage hyphen deal dot com”.
-Many people will usually forgot to type the hyphen.
-Url’s with hyphens do not look professional.

I usually don't remember website domains...I go to Google and type in the company name. It's just easier than trying different web addresses that I think are right when Google will list them for me. Then once I go there once, it is already in the bar when I start typing out the first few letters.. I'm not sure if that's the normal or I'm just lazy.

Your points should be obvious to most but from what I've been seeing on the web it is not. Hopefully some of them will read this thread.

Keywords in your domain name do definitely help, but when the competition figures that out then its help really becomes diluted. As competition grows you will need much, much more like quality content and long tail search.

That means you need brandable domain name, not keywords in domain name
