Can someone in lay terms explain the complications that would be created by this scenario:
We have a domain name, registered since late 90's, this domain name is our website, which is hosted at an outside source. It is redirected through a zone file from our new VPS Server - to a specfic IP address.
We just moved to a new VPS server, mostly for our email and our email broadcast program, we did this through a company called Verio - they set the new VPS server name to the same as our domain - one of the guys who has worked on some programming for us, said this will be an issue.. he can not explain to us why though, well, he explained it, but I am just not getting it. He stated we should buy another domain name, or use one we own and name this new VPS a new name.

i can't see an issue with this, i have done it before a few times and haven't come across issues with it.

the only forseeable issue might arise if the programs use the servername for some reason, but this shouldn't realy be an issue either, it's semi common.
