    Yes it does,
It makes you eligible for the exact match bonus that will help you rank better for that particular keyword in teh SERPs.

However this is only effective is your keyword is all that is there in the domain name too. Any extra characters voids this.

e.g. if your keyword is 'eat fries', then your domain should be eatfries.tld, anything like eatfriess.tld or eat-fries.tld doesn't work.

It's help and give you some extra bonus but is not the main factor.
Example : my website have nothing of my keywords as domain name but is well rank in google and other search engines.
Clue : webpage is over 7 years old and have quality backlinks with high PR's and well offpage and online Seo done ;)

It does make some sense but the more important thing is the kind of competition those keyword has and also the extension you chose.

I have noticed that having keywords in the domain name is especially effective for sites doing well in Yahoo and Bing, even for competive searches. It seems to have less effect for Google (although I'm sure it helps).

I have to disagree. eat-fries.tld will help, it's maybe even better than eatfries.tld
Let me give you an example. Let's say the domain name is eatomelet.com - this can help for indexing "E atom elet" ? Maybe the example is not perfect (just don't want to loose time on finding something better), but you get my idea. When you use hyphens it helps to index keyword in domain name even better!

As we have mentioned, it will help your web site rank better, but if you do not work, and build quality back links to your web site targeting for that particular keywords, then in most cases your web site would not rank well for that keyword specially if there is a strong competition.

Consider it as bonus which will help your web site rank easier, and better than other web sites which do not posses the same domain property. Also, do not forget that search engine ranking depends on many factors, such as web site SEO, quality of back links, content, URL formation, etc...
