Domain Name and 301 Redirects

If I use 301 redirect on one domain, can both be ranked in the search engine ?

Say, if I have 50 backlinks to xyz.com and I keep this domain for a year, then I add a 301 redirect so all the visitors get directed to a new domain (still one year old) abc.com

What will happen with the website's authority ? Will the xyz.com get replaced by abc.com in Google in the search results?

And will the backlinks be counted as towards the new abc.com domain after the 301 ?

Also, say the keywords I am targetting are abc, and the reason for buying abc.com was for ranking higher in SE for that keyword. Would I go up higher in ranking for this particular keyword, because I have it in the domain name, after the redirect than before with the xyz.com ?

These questions have really been 'haunting' me I guess. +rep to whoever can show me the answers.
