Ok I have an idea for a site that would seriously be profitable. But the .COM domain is already taking so I was thinking of just getting the .NET of the same domain sense its available. My team and I have been talking about how to develope the site and how to market it. While spending time on the forum I've learn alot and more each day. So I would like to experience and thoughts from other people If I develope on the .NET domain would that make the .COM domain more valuble. As well since they don't have a site for the .COM that would take my idea and develop a similar site for the .COM, even if its not as good they would easily be able to build off of my idea. I would appriciate any thoughts about this.
If your site does become successful on the net it isnt the end of the world but you may eventually have to pay a very high price for it. Topix.com sold to topix.net for 1mil. Apple had to buy iPhone.com for many millions. While these are extreme examples, it is cases where a company branded another extension (apple had .org I believe) and then have to get the .com.
I'm curerntly holding off off becuase once I register the domain they would easily to be able to copy my idea and run with it.
