When I was optimizing my first site - it took it exactly 7 months (after domain registration) to get out of the sandbox.

You have to understand what sandbox is... Sandbox is a filter that does not let new sites with less trust to rank. You gain trust by trustworthy backlinks which come from some authorative sources like directories, sites and blogs. If you are not going to get backlinks (read trust) then never expect to come out of sandbox.

on google with the "link:" command it looks like you only have a few links (about five)...maybe this is why? i know google only updates those backlinks once in a while but that is very few i think.

    Thats a mistake then.
Need to register for the max,
and if the target audience is the UK you will get a far quicker result on G with a co. uk. I think the quarantine is longer for .com in the Uk

You are probally having the same problem as me then. It is the Trust Rank of the site you need. This why a google link of a PR 5 or a DMOZ 5 can beat newer sites that have PR7's 8's etc. As only a percentage of the link is showing.
These answer, is the phone. Find an old site, and ring up and beg for a link or Sponsor!
