Domain I want will expires in January, please help

    Hi all,

The domain I want expires in January but I am in some kind of situation and need advice and I have some questions.

    1. The owner might or might not renew, don't know.
    2. Other people are after the domain, so I need to backorder it.

If a domain is set to expire on January, when is the good time to backorder it? How early is early and how late is late?

If the owner renews it, is the backorder still live to when the domain expires in a year or two (if the owner doesn't renew it then) ?

Lastly, can I put a permanent backorder on a domain, so whenever it expires I have a shot at it?

depends on registrar... many have agreements with companie slike namejet, snapnames, etc where it wont actually expire. then you are required to place the backorder at the proper site. if it actually expires backorder it everywhere.... snapnames, pool, namejet

If you really want to get the domain and domain are good. Just place a back order. There will cost you only $60.

But when is a good time to place a backorder? Anytime is good? I've never backordered a domain before so I am unfamiliar with the process.

My worry is, do I wait to see if the domain gets renewed then put in the backorder, that way I know the owner didn't renew and my backorder money isn't wasted, or put in a backorder now? Even thought it expires in January, and the owner might renew it.

If it expires in Jan then there is still about 75 days til it gets released, I think you should wait til at least the expiry date to see if the owner renews. I found this article to be a big help on the domain expiry process

you can place a backorder in pool.com and at snapnames.com you DONT need to pay in advance so why not do it at any time???also backorder it in godaddy (allthought is litle chance go daddy capture the domain there it acept only one to backorder the domain and it will cost you only 18$if they dont catch it you can use the backorder for an other domain. For the others after capture the domain the domain goes to the high bider of the users have prebackorder the domain.Thats all you have to know my friend.Happy hunting.

Depending on the backorder service, they might or might not charge you until
they've successfully acquired the name for you. Ask them that.

Generally, it's preferable to place one before a domain name expires. But you'll
really never know if the registrant will renew it or not unless you can find any
    remote clues or so elsewhere.

In general, here is the process I remember:

    The domain expires

The registrar then gives the domain owner a certain amount of time to reclaim the domain (about 2 weeks on godaddy from expiration date)

At this point the content on the web site is lost and it might be parked

Once the domain passes the previous stage, it's then held for a certain amount of time (30 days I believe for godaddy).

After that, it does into the deleted stack where it can be picked up by anyone.

This process was created to save domains from people trying to hijack them and do illegal transfers, etc. Gives them time to investigate claims.

If there's only one backorder, they can get it. If there's more than one backorder for it, there is a lottery and the winner gets it.

    ###

Godaddy charges $18 for the service. If you don't get the domain, you can reapply the backorder fees to try to get another one until you're successful.

I just went through this with a domain I put a backorder on.

The periods of time for any of the stages varies by the registrar company.

    Hope this helps...

How bad do you want it? You can see if the owner's info is listed on WhoIS and make an offer.

I thought about that in my case, but the one I want is parked. He's had it since 1999 and it expires mid Dec. I'm thinking if I make an offer, he might re-register it when he otherwise might not have. It's a very good domain. I'm sure he knows how much it's worth.

I have it backordered already thru GoDaddy. It's parked with them too so I should get it easily enough if it expires.

If the domain name is not being used, why not write to the current owner and make an offer.

The thing is that there are some people who wait till right before the domain name to expire to renew or if the domain name is on auto-renewal, it would be done at the expiry date. So it may not be officially left to expire.

Check the forum re: godaddy backordering. I think the overall experience with them was pretty negative.

Thanks for all the advice. I don't want to contact the owner incase he or she gets greedy, and renew just for the sake of it.

So the best procedure is to wait till the date of the expiry, then order backorder for the domain? All I want to know is the right phase or time to use backorder.

While I wrote an article about this, I'll give the shorthand.

Nowadays various registrars will try to auction an expired domain name to any
interested party before they delete it within 45 days (except eNom) after it's
not renewed. Some have their own in-house process, while others outsource
it through those who specialize in it.

The answer to your question lies in the registrar who currently holds the name
in question. Read their deletion policies and/or ask them questions what they'll
do to an expired domain name that's not renewed on time.

Their answer, if they reply, will give you a clue what to do next. Good luck.

Godaddy sends all expired domains to their TDNam auctions. ALL of them. Backorder with them is deceptive. They only apply the backorder fees as your first bid on the auction -- which makes your interest known to all. I looked into this a week ago and verified with them.
