Domain Extensions

Hello. I have a question regarding a client I'm working with. They're using a .org for a business, and I feel the .org extension doesn't fit the domain.

My main curiousity about it is if the extension of the domain will effect how it ranks in search engines. I'm not sure if search engines are able to recognize the .org extension as an organization - usually .org websites are non-profit.

Replies and opinions appreciated on this matter.

    Thanks. :)

I'm with you that a dot org does not look very business oriented but don't think it matters at all in regard to SERPs. If the dot com is available I would probably encourage client to pick it up as well but doubt if it is available or else client would probably have bought.

Yeah, but I'm not sure if it's practicle to suggest the use of the .biz extension. Webmasters may recognize the .biz extension as "business" but I don't feel that average internet consumers will see it to be a business or professional website.

    Seconded (is that a word??!?!).

Out of interest, has the company started marketing the website much? Would it be easy enough to make the transition over to .com?

I have always related .org sites to not for profit entities as well. Do you figure there will be any negative issues regarding its usage for a business? I'd be concerned about people feeling it is out of place, kind of like frowning on the guy using a handicapped stall in the bathroom if he's not handicapped. I know this is likely silly, but it's just the mindset. By no means am I saying they are doing anything wrong, but people may just perceive it as such through the traditional use for that particular extension.

I doubt anyone would look down on the company for it, it just looks a little bit strange!

Hm, well if it won't effect SEO, do you feel the .biz extension will be more suitable for a this domain?

    It is a business.

Logically the .biz would be the best option. However some people perceive the TLD to be too cheap/informal for their bizness (see what I did there?).

Still I think .biz wins out over .org.

I've heard .org sites pass more link-love than .com. I wonder if that's true. I try to get links from .org sites for that reason, but all I've come across have been non-profits.
