We all know that .edu is the most important to capture... but what about the others? Do .org backlinks weigh more than .com? .net?

For me the order is as follows with Gov link holding the highest value
    1. .Gov
    2. .Edu
    3. .Org
    4. .Com
    5. .Net

    Thanks

I beleieve it is not the extension that provide more value for the backlinks, it is more that you have chance to have a more quality website with better content on a .gov/.edu

I agree. It's a lot more likely that a government or edu site has a lot of links from authority sites and so the site often becomes an authority in it's niche. The extension doesn't matter, rather the quality of the links coming into the site.

Domain extensions have nothing to do with backlinks quality. Any backlink, that comes from a relevant and High PR page is important.

I agree with the people above that state that the domain extension is not important. Just focus on getting links from quality websites. People unnecessarily stress about getting .gov or .edu links. Those links could be even harder to attain than links from a quality .com or other extension. It doesn't make sense for search engines to give any kind of extra boost just because of the extension. .edu and .gov websites are usually older websites who naturally attract a lot of one way links. Think of how many people would link to their college's website on their online resume, personal website or social networking profile.

Well, domain extension and website quality nearly go hand-in-hand... nearly. As far instance, a .edu site is going to better respected by a domain because it's school-operated. But then, does Google see .org as a higher priority because there's a greater likelihood it's operated by an organization, or one domain extension over the next because the cost is higher?
