Domain Appraisals..

I know there's a forum for a appraisals but this post isn't askin 4 one..

Recently, I was in the middle of a domain sale and the potential buyer wanted the domains appraised, which wasn't a bad idea - you never know, I've could've gotten more then I asked for.. but then, the potential buyer wanted me to spend $60 + on an appraisal.. He said GoDaddy and SEDO appraisal services are not manual. They are just collecting money using their well-known names.

He also quoted a forum reply and stated he agrees with it 100%. The forum reply is: "Many Internet users are not smart enough and popular domain brokers are using this fact to make money. They offer them cheap appraisal services. But if their customers would have something in their heads they'd understand experts could not make a professional research for $15-$20. These appraisals are made by machines. Easy money for such appraisers as http://www.Afternic.com and several other major brokers that offer cheap auto-generated appraisals. In my eyes, all services under $60-$65 are not manual and the results are generated by special scripts. I don't trust auto-generated appraisals."

What is your opinion? Are $15 appraisals BS appraisals?

    Thank you for your time...

I do not know the answer to your question but do know one scam is the following. Suppose I run a domain appraisal service, and I inquire about buying a domain name from you. I tell you I will consider your domain if you have it appraised at so and so appraisal service (my service). You spend your money and get the domain name appraised and then I back out of buying.

    Good luck.

that's a scam...He is the one who provide that appraisal service! You won't see him anymore after you spend that 15 buck

As i told you before, that offer is too good to be true. Don't waste your money!

I would agree, but unfortunately I brought the idea of an appraisal myself.. and he didn't give me a place to get the appraisal - he just said not to get it from sedo or godaddy...

I'm not sure - I haven't heard back from him yet - and I have a bad feeling - I should've sold it when I had the chance.. this sucks...

what do you think is a reasonable price for a domain appraisal?

No, the buyer will know what it's worth to the buyer's business and will pay only so much. It may be that your appraisal is lower or higher than the value.

Years ago I tried to get pcpm.com but it was owned by the "palm coast perl mongers" - a group of perl scripters. It's now parked.

Apart from the obvious 4 letter .com aspect it's of little value, it isn't a word, it doesn't really stand for much.

However to my business it's really important and I'd pay more than someone who was just after a 4 letter .com

How can an appraisal take into account those business circumstances that led me to the domain in the first place?

I found a free online appraisal service (Leapfish.com) a while back and I've been messing around with thier service. So far it seems to be giving fairly decent appraisals.

Does anyone else have experience with or opinions of the Leapfish.com site??

This may be a free alternative!

Actually, leapfish was way too low for a bunch of domains I entered. Many sold for much much more or had much higher offers than their appraisals.

    Now to your question:
Don't bother with an appraisal. You could ask ten people here who are domainers what your name is worth and they will be as accurate (or inaccurate) as any appraisal company.

If the domain is an acronym there is a going rate among domain resellers and you could get a decent appraisal for reseller value but not end user.

The scam referred to above is from a company called allfordomain. If someone sends you a mail referring to them run away.

Godaddy and netsol offer automated appraisals. They are worthless. You can get the same thing from swiftappraisal.com

Afternic and Sedo DO both offer manual appraisals. They are template like in nature. The advantage here is you can speak to the person who did your appraisal and get a sort of consult from them.

I wouldn't recommend an appraisal unless it was for a 1 word .com.

    Appraisals are not needed.

The best (resellers) appraisal is putting it up for sale and see the offers you get.
An endusers appraisal cant be made in my opinion since its all about there budget and how bad they want your name
