I think that we should say "domain registration years". Search engine like Google will see how many years the domains have registered for. Over 2 years is OK. You can see details here:

it definitely plays a big part

PageRank is a joke and plays little

I can look at my OWN domains and see the difference

Domain age is important for google because an aged domain/website would have passed the google sandbox. but i have also seen new websites rank well in search engines.you never know though:)

I disagree, domain age is almost nothing, I was number 2 in 80 days of newly registered domain. and this is in the seo market, when others are 5-6-7 years old.

For OP's point number two regarding how long the domain has been registered/renewal date...
I've both read that several times and heard it from an employee of Godaddy.
It seems that the word out there is 2-5 yrs of registration at a time (before the next renewal date).
Of course, an associate of a registrar might not be exactly the source for impartial info
on a subject such as this...I do realize that.

    yah, thats before "settling"

    HOW LONG DID YOU STAY

My sites has held number one with NO NEW LINKS and NO NEW SEO for 5-6 years...and I know for a fact the other companies have spent millions on seo

Is an aged domain name any use though if it has never had a site? When we register a domain we stick a simple text site up in the short term to get it indexed and start the ageing process.

i believe domain age in combination with aged backlinks play a role. i had a site that was once #1 in google for a celebrity in the early 2000's. i totally neglected it starting around 2003 after the advertisement market (Value Click) dove from around $750 per month to maybe $20 every several months. in 2006 my credit card expired with the hosting company and it totally fell off the Google map - for 2 years and 1 month. still had all those back links though. i resurrected it last month and it eventually made a blip on google ranking at the 151 position. previous iteration was 100% HTML. now it's on PHP using joomla. i uploaded all 300+ archived articles and i'm updating the content every 2 days. it's been floating around rank 19 on page 3 for the celebrity name the last several weeks. hope to make front page again soon! :D

I purchased my domain name for 1 year and in the first 3 days I was on Google's front page under Graphic Advertisments or "Craigs List Graphic Ads" or "Graphic ads" I dont think age has any relivance. Its all how your site is constructed from the ground up.

graphic advertisements is not too competitive though with only 173k results. my celebrity site has 12,200,000 results for the first and last name which would make it difficult to even crack page 30.

no one really does know the truth about this. However for many domainers domain age does play a role when buying or selling a domain. It is also important to note that mostly all established sites today have old domains. Aged domains are also very limited which is also why they are in demand. But when it comes to ranking I do not think age plays a major role.

The main thought about domain age is that it does play a role in ranking in the search engines.

Yeah, i feel it is much easier to progress the SEO of a site that has been around for a while, I think it plays a good part in SEO to stop spammers.

Domain age is a factor, but not one that carries a huge amount of weight.

Google algorithms use relational variables i.e.:

age of domain compared to the amount of time it has been indexed, which in turn is compared to the rate of growth.

a 5 year old parked domain that all of a sudden has content on blue widgets is not going to top a 2 year old domain that has been updating/adding blue widget content daily since it's start and has developed a natural pattern of backlinks over that 2 year span.
