Ok, so I plan to put up a site (on Wordpress) for a topic related purely to the year 2009 (url with include 2009 as well)

Anyway, would it be advisable to buy the domain now, put up a simple website for the next few months and build backlinks to avoid sandboxing in 2009 and have higher SERP's then as well

I think it would, just want u guys confirmation

Definately, The moment I think about a Niche i want to build on I register quite a few related domains immediately. Domain age is very important as it relates to Sandboxing and Natural Ranking :)

Good luck with your website anyways.

Thanks - just on that, how long after indexing does sandboxing occur?

Sure, create the site now, publish some content, build just a few backlinks and leave it like that for some time.
A few months later when you're ready to dedicate more time on this project it will be easier to rank higher and avoid sandbox.

even if you don't get back links its enough to submit the domain to google to get rid of the sand box

Put up a single page with some of the text and keywords of your topic. Then start building links to it. The sites where I've done this have moved up much faster in the SERPs and in traffic once I deployed the real site.

I put up some placeholder pages about a year ago and they do okay now in search.

I also made up a keyword, scifipie. I do great with it in returns. now to get it popular, lol

Yeah, domain name is kind of important and you will escape (or rather, go through it right now) the sandbox if you register it right now and put up a page or two.
