domain age and rankings

i am launching a new site for my business, where i will be advertising online and off.

i own several variations of my website, plural, singular etc.

one domain name is 2.5 years old and the rest are new.

of course the best sounding name one of the new ones, and this one will be advertised offline

In order to get rankings faster should I:

    1. Use the 2.5 year old site and 301 the new one to the 2.5 one?

    2. Use the new domain and 301 the 2.5 year old one to the new site?

Which scenario has the best chance to get me the better rankings faster? If I used the option 1, could i switch the order in a year or so to make the new domain the dominant one and not lose much in rankings?

    thanks
    scott

I think use the new domain you want and redirect your old domain to the new one.

I've done this a couple of times, but a little differently. I had a few not so well performing domains/sites, nevertheless they had bits of pagerank (~PR2). What i did is created a related content pages on my new domain and then 301 redirected those old domains directly to the deep pages on a new domain. It has worked for me better than expected.

Has it been listed with google for 2.5 yrs or just owned and nothing done with for the last 2.5 yrs? Reason I ask, if nothing has been done with the domain name over the past 2.5 yrs then google will still view it as a new sites since it has never visited the domain before.

You can use 301 redirect your old domain to the new one.

I also will recommend redirecting 301 the old one to the new one.

But first get some PR and good rankings with the old one

If your Old site have some pages and well indexed in Google then redirect new one to the old and promote the old one. It will provide quick results.

ok so at first i should use the old one, and 301 the new one there. and then after i have some rankings and some time has passed so the new one is out of the sandbox, i can reverse the order so that now the old one is 301'd to the new one.

and if so, then do i build links to the old one first and then to the new one? or do i just build links to the new one only the whole time?

did the old domain drop did you say? I bought a domain with PR that had dropped and it lost all it rank pretty much instantly. Is that the norm or is there a way of keeping it?

Is 301 redirection is safe to use because I heard that it will penalized your site.

If new domain contains keyword of your products or services than it will be beneficial for you to use new domain.
