Just got this from a friend.

The 'baiji' a freshwater dolphin in China that was previously believed to be functionally extinct has been spotted and filmed in China.

Here is a link to his story on digg: http://digg.com/environment/Extinct_dolphin_spotted_in_Yangtze_River

So there is still hope for this species to be saved. Haha, which will also save some face for China. ;)

It may be too late though. Now that the baiji has been spotted again, scientists need to try to capture some and breed them in captivity. I fear that they will not be successful. :(

I guess we'll have to wait and see how things play out.

Thats great news! But they must now work to preserve these dolphins from the brink of extinction.

With just one specimen spotted, the species might still be fucntionally extinct. Let's hope there are more and they can still breed.
