Hello friends, I am going to invest quite a good chunk into a social networking type of site. I have been looking for good script and found Dolphin by BoonEx with Widget Suit called Ray. I am imagining a good website if its running Dolphin with Ray, but after searching around and looking for reviews i found mixed response. Some people give it 10/10 .. on the other hand some people hate it like hell. I'd prefer to collect a couple reviews from my fellow DP members, especially from those who have personal experience with this script and company. I heard its buggy, I think its not a very big problem .. if you hire a programmer which keep on fixing every found bug, things can be better in 2-3 weeks. Am I right? Please tell me your experience, I will be thankful for it. And also, best and helping posts always deserve reps
It's a little buggy to install but good fixes in the forum for problems.. I am just now testing it on a test site and seems to work ok. I have not purchased the full ray suite because I wanted to see it work before I put out a lot of cash. I am still testing but everything appears to work just fine. Comes with 8 templates but you will want change some of the graphics as I did. I would say all in all it is a good script but if you buy the Ray Pro it is about the same price as phpfox. All the Best,
Thank you for helping post wendallb. +reps. ya, I will change the graphic in fact whole template. Will also buy Ray suit. I have not seen Ray suit working somewhere but from demos and descriptions it looks really cool and for that quality i think $300 or so is decent price. I have talked to a couple programmers who have worked with these scripts, they say to remain away from phpfox .. and use dolphin. Any other suggestions/reviews guys?
Just yesterday I recieved an email form them stating that if you were a contributor you could use the new Ray 3.0 suite on one site. A contributor is $100 a year I think. So you might check that out before you buy the whole thing at almost $300.00.
hi, I have personal experience with company and worked for BoonEx up to the end of December, 2006. Well, Dolphin was buggy indeed but it was continuously improving. Can't say much about v5.6 coz it was released after my leaving. But i think tech guys at BoonEx are always welcome to help and fix the bugs you find while using Dolphin and a special website exists for that purpose, it's expertzzz.com
Any more reviews? Any big site using Dolphin? ... PS. i've been to expertzzz.com site, and its too complex .. you cant easily find what you want.
My experience goes back a long time with this lot. Yo can read my post in this thread. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=515666
I would not -- NOT go to Dolphin at all. Here is why: 1) Boonex banners are so encrypted into many of the programs you will spend countless of hours trying to fix it. 2) Some of the programmers create fake modules -- which aren't even FREE. (another investment) and they are actually scammers there (do a search in the forums there). 3) Dolphin doesn't allow for flexibility as another social networking site does. I would recommend: Drupal (maybe pricey to customize but it can grow with your company). The modules are FREE The programmers are SINCERE about their work, i.e. this is a community of professional experts that are interested in maintaining their reputation. There are a LOT more sincer programmers who have websites to customize I could recommend Elgg, but it is rather plain for me. IceCore is another social networking website that is advanced. DOLPHIN -NO, NO NO! Don't say I didnt warn you.
What modules would you say are the best for using Drupal as a social networking site? I am thinking of Elgg but I'm a huge Drupal fan.
^Einstein- I love Drupal. There are so many professionals that are willing to organically grow your company. They have seminars to ensure that education is paramount. You will find many more people who take their craft seriously. And there are expert websites that are on their drupal page to ask for other people. For me the Drupal Customizations that fit right and exact are: The community modules and the organic group modules. I will give you (my peers) another warning (hindsight is 20/20) I initially was so excited about all the modules it literally shut my system down. So take care to ensure that everything is compatible and ask yourself does your community really really NEED this module before uploading? There are service providers there that I like. And they seem to handle their pitches with professional acumen. I like them. Elgg seems like a wonderful support system too. IceCore a/k/a KaBlink is a heavy duty one too. Those three are more sophisticated but they will last the long haul. Dolphin is a cheap prostitute that you can only deal with one time. Marry the others. lol
I've had a lot of success with Dolphin. I think if you aren't comfortable with php and mods then it isn't for you. In terms of the what thenextbigthing01 says here what I say: re:"1) Boonex banners are so encrypted into many of the programs you will spend countless of hours trying to fix it." I've never had this problem. re:"2) Some of the programmers create fake modules -- which aren't even FREE. (another investment) and they are actually scammers there (do a search in the forums there)." This is not isolated to Boonex - this happens all over the Web. Not sure how this one even made it to the list. re:"3) Dolphin doesn't allow for flexibility as another social networking site does." I can make any layout, mod and custom app with Dolphin. I can mix with Joomla, phpBB, VBulletin, you name it it can be done. It's all PHP and mySQL. You just need to knwo what you're doing. I think the biggest challenge with Dolphin is understanding how the templating system works and the block paradigm that uses jQuery. If you think it was tough try about 7 versions ago. That was crazy. It is much much better now. ...sip...
a free hosting provider? all providers are going to ask some amount of money.. I don't think I understand ur question
