How many people have used this script? I heard that this script is the best social networking script which you can get for free. But I also think that ads are displayed along with the free version. So please tell me about your experiences of this software and also tell me what kind of ads are displayed with the free version.

I've made a few sites with Boonex Dolphin and have also programmed custom mods for my clients.

The most recent releases are by far the most stable. However, there is always room to improve. When you consider earlier versions were a bit of a horror story, I am personally very happy with how the script has started to reach some decent attention.

There are two main versions. Adfree and free. They also have another version called SmartPro. If you plan on doing the social net thing seriously, apparently this is the way to go. It is also pricey.

Adfree is about $100 a year and that will get rid of the logos at the bottom of the page. I find a lot of my clients go that route to test the waters. Then after the first year they go for the gold with SmartPro.

For me, I use the free version for my Dolphin Tutorial site and also program custom mods etc. It works for me and so far the script has gotten much better and the community is maturing.

It's been good so far :)

Worst crap I have ever had to deal with. Its an utter trainwreck. The code is riddled with logic errors and the support is terrible.

steer clear of that stuff, its a waste of time.

    hope that helps,
    Nigel

Nigel and jazzygift, what versions did you guys work with?

Maybe I lucked out but I'm very happy with it. It's been able to do what I need it to do and so far so good.

Well for someone who thinks it's crap you're pretty quick to install a version that's only been out for a few weeks. Most of the developers I know are still on version 611.

Question: What made you want to spend your time installing something you felt was crap?

So you're into wasting time and you're into crap.

    nice.

....lemme add one of these ;)

Take it easy dolphin fanboy. I install stuff to check it out. It's still crap. Futhermore, I don't consider spending 8 minutes to install something, to see if they have made any substantial progress, a waste of my time. I am however fully up to speed on how bad that stuff is. Dodgy php, bad business model, bad support. And, as far as I felt like researching it, it's founded by Russian crooks and scam artists.

Do yourself a favor and search DP for Dolphin and read what others have to say about it. I don't hold a monopoly on said opinion.

Here are some quotes from DP members for you.

"You will be scammed by a woman)))This Boonex company is run by a Russian scammer Yulia Chibisova also known as Yulia Sivtsova (the same person, check the flat number on Whois) from Kyrgyzstan.
    "

"It is one of the worst scripts I have seen... it is very buggy and my site always showed some error when I installed it to test it on one of my sites.... I would never recommend but at the same time it is free .. so if you are one who likes free products you might opt for it but it would surely give you some problems"

You can scroll down and find plenty of posts on the subject. That said, if you think it is a viable, professional solution, then have at it. Just don't chide me because you don't like my opinion please.... I didn't exactly just fall off the truck.

Interesting. I know about those threads. And you know, on the Internet you can be anyone all at once.

    Let me think about this.

Warning, you probably won't like what I'm about to write next.

Not sure if you want me to PM you or post it publicly.

You're kidding right? Tell me you're not serious with that link...

LOL! Nigel, anyone can add anything at any time. The only vetting process for a post is a captcha and even then it's not done right.

Well dude, you earned a point in my books. You made me laugh and smile today. All is cool btw and I am not here to upset you. It just tells me a bit about who I'm dealing with.

I just want to let you know that in future, that is not what most pros will consider a viable way of proving your points.

If you have the proper server configurations it does work out of the box.

However comma... what most in this thread have said is correct. Boonex support is in fact horrible and the script is poorly written and full of bugs that you'll need to hire a professional to fix for you if you're not a PHP coder. So don't think for a second that the initial cost of the adFree version is all you'll have to pay.

Does it sound like I just contradicted myself? Well it probably does because it depends on how you define "works". In this instance my definition of "works" is that you can get through the installation and can see your homepage without errors.

Unlike Nigel, as you pointed out, I'll provide you a link to an actual credible source to back up my claims http://www.boonex.com/unity/forums/ <-- their own community forums.

Simply go there and read the TONS of DAILY posts from people just trying to get it to work.... That's really all you need to see. No more arguments need to be made. Those are actual people who have installed the script and found it to suck in terms of usability.

Like I said above if you have the proper server configuration it will work out of the box but I left out 2 caveats. 1 I have done a little coding in my day and 2 it took me a week to figure out all the little nuances it takes to make your server the proper configuration. Don't even THINK about installing this on a shared hosting plan.

It's got the best feature set of any social networking software I've seen out there right now. But getting it all to work is a whole different story. If you are not a programmer/server expert and are unwilling or unable to hire that expertise this is not the software for you at this point in its development. But it's getting there.

    In short: Not for novices.

NOTE: See the link in my sig for a (heavily modded) look at what it can do in the right hands.

Personally for me, Dolphin has been great. But then again, it may be because I have experience in the web development field. I guess you can put it this way, it's not newbie friendly. However, once you have it up and running, it's fine.
