Hi, I am doing some research for a new and bold project and I hope I am not getting too "personal" with my request for information and I hope some admins will be so kind and oblige my request. It may even be interesting to see what differences there are. I certainly would appreciate any help very much. My humble request is for admins to fill out the fields below describing their current hosting setups. If you don't know all the answers, no problem. I'll take any information I can get. Server/ Webspace package type: (i.e. VPS, Shared Server, Managed Server, Dedicated Server) RAM Available: CPUs Available: CPU Speed: Disk Space Available: Disk Space used: Payment Terms: (i.e. monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually) Cost per Month: Overall happiness with the hosting (1-10, 10 being very happy): Comments as to what makes you unhappy about your service or you feel is constantly a PITA, if at all.: What is running on this hosting?:(i.e. 2 PHPBB forums and a Wordpress site) Amount of Gigs in outbound transfer: If a Database is in use, max number of transactions per second: Number of site admins, server admins (ops) and team members: Do you feel you are paying for a lot more power than you actually need?: Thanks to all in advance who help. Again, I really appreciate it. Scott p.s. if the information is too confidential, but you'd like to share it, please do send me the info per private conversation. Thanks! The text below is for you to cut and paste to make your reply easier.... Um, any feedback would be great. Even if it is, "Sorry, but I don't want to give out that kind of information" or "This is too much work for me to be interested." Thanks! Scott

Thanks for that Liamwli. And my bad. I meant average queries per second and not max transactions per second. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4737047/how-to-measure-queries-per-second If you are reading Shawn, could you change the lines in the thread above from If a Database is in use, max number of transactions per second: to If a Database is in use, average number of queries per second: Thanks. Scott
Now if only a few more admins could share their setup with us. Hmm...I'll do it for my server too just to make this a bit more interesting. Kind of mixed that up there didn't I? I live in Germany and commas are used as decimal points. So yeah, all commas are decimal points. Scott
Are you targeting a Germany / European audience of more the US / asia? Do you feel you are paying for a lot more power than you actually need?: nope
Do you mean for the project? We are definitely going global at one point, but for a start, as most do, it will target the US first and as quickly as possible move to Europe. Just your site. Scott
Don't get your hopes too high. We are just at the very, very beginning. But soon is in about a month. We will be posting information about some general concepts we are tackling and also will be going for seed funding. After that and with some success with funding, I'd expect to have our first services running within 2 years. So, again, we are just at the very start and have a long way to go!. Scott
In that case you should maybe focus on hosting in the US if you are fine with the support times as you have different time zones and only a few hours of overlap during working hours. No Team, doing most stuff on my own or outsourcing it.
Not sure why you say that as this research isn't aimed at a particular hosting solution. This is aimed more to find out the kind of hosting people have, what usage they are getting out of it and if they are satisfied with the service. Our project is, you could say, another layer above hosting and we will be taking any hosting kind of issues out of the picture for our customers and I'd like to know if there are even these issues. I think there are issues, people just don't realize, there are solutions for them. As for our hosting selection, we're pretty sure we will be using Rackspace for our project. Rackspace is one of the leading cloud computing companies in the World and quite strong in the US with two very large data centers and they are also a global hoster with data centers in England, Hongkong and Australia. So if we end up growing, we should be able to grow with them. They also have a service where they will run their Open Cloud in any data center you want to work with for you. http://www.rackspace.com/cloud/private/ Scott
