Doing Research for Massive E-commerce Start-up

    Hello, Everybody.

I understand that this forum seems to be the place to go when it comes to asking questions about website design and similar topics, and after reading through several of the threads everyone seems rather intelligent and helpful, which is nice.

Anyway, I hope my questions can be answered here. I will do my best to be specific. Let me preface these questions by saying that my start-up will be web-based and international in scope with functions similar to Amazon, and will require a significant server infrastructure in place on day 1. My company is aiming at going live in 5 countries to start with. For comparison Amazon.com currently has server rooms in over 100 countries.

    What I need to know:

    1) What sort of hardware do I need in each country to facilitate the massive number of search hits and inquiries that I will receive if I assume that we will receive server traffic that of 1% of Amazon's total, per country, per second? Specifically, what server product, how much per unit, and how many units per country given the specific hardware?

Note: I know that each of Amazon's 100 different server location has over 50,000 servers each (maybe more), but they also get over 1.1 million queries per second globally. Divided by 100 (100 countries) that is basically 11,000 hits per second per country. Again divided by 100, to give us 1%, that is 110 queries per second.

    2) Has anyone heard of a company which is capable of handling and setting up large server rooms for massive international e-commerce sites? I'm sure there is one but google is not always a friend.

If anyone knows of a more appropriate forum to ask this question please tell :)

Please just ask if you need anything clarified, but please note that I cannot go into exact details about my company due to NDA reasons.

    Cheers,
    MAF

Granted, if you're talking about a real competitor, you're gonna need your own datacenters - buy an old army-bunker, set up shop, get dedicated, bundled fiberlines, and you're good to go. Costly as hell, but you're gonna need it soon enough, if you achieve what you seem to be aiming for. I hope you have a financial backing for this, because this is NOT gonna be cheap. Even if you start out with just dedicated servers in a datacenter, running the bandwidth-costs and the amount of servers needed, not to mention the software you need to run, will span millions.

This sounds like a very costly project. However I run a large scale ecommerce site and have grown rapidly and spend a lot on servers every month. I started out small and have scaled to multiple dedicated servers at this point. I use a company based out of Austin tx called Codero. I know they have the resources and man power to get you going. They have the best deals I have found and theiir support is US based. I recommend you check them out. Hope that helps.
