Doing local web design

Most of the work I get is through word of mouth. However, I'd like to contact a few local groups in hopes of picking up some more work. I was thinking of contacting charities, clubs, etc..

Firstly - how do most of you go about finding the companies? Are you selective or do you put together a list and contact each?

Secondly - how exactly do you go about contacting these people? Do you e-mail? Call? Mail a letter? Walk in?

Thirdly - Any other information you'd like to add? :)

I would not cold call or just walk in. People really do not like that.

I would recommend find businesses with very outdated websites (usually in the phonebook) and writing them short letters saying you can redesign and update their websites for a reasonable price.

But cold calling or just walking is not that effective and it really makes people angry.
