My current job gives me access to some great CAD software which I use daily to do work for some rather large companies in the US; detailing and modeling components for equipment. However, there are periods when projects are delayed sometimes for months at a time. A lot of times we sit around browsing the web, play cards, whatever, until the new specs find their way to our team. I'd rather do some work. I know enough html to make a simple website with a portfolio, contact form, description of services, etc which I could use to advertise what I have to offer. I have a technical background, with zero business experience. The research I've done indicates a Sole Proprietorship is what I'm looking for. The great thing about doing this work is that I don't have to purchase any equipment or space, since I already have access to both. Assuming I do make a website and advertise my services in my area and business starts coming my way: What is the most common form of payment for a one-man startup - should I get a merchant account for credit cards? Should I talk to a CPA about taxes? Maybe set up a separate account for taxes and put the money in there as a it comes in?
