    Generally speaking, and I mean very generally, yes - links built for "Dog Obedience Training" will have some knock-on effect for "Dog Training".

    Well not quite .... but if you build backlinks with both (aleternating anchor text) then you have good chance .... to get rankings

    Dog Training would be harder to get than dog obedience training however more traffic for dog training.

    It's clear that he wants to have a good position for this keyword to increase his revenue. While dog training may bring more traffic, dog obedience training may bring more targeted traffic. You can have a keyword getting you 100 visitors a day, but conversion rate is at 0.5%. On the other hand, you may have 3 keywords and each is bringing at most 20 visitors a day, but converting at 5%.

    It's all about relevance and niche keywords.
