Copied straight from Caroline Middlebrook's site.... but a good list nonetheless! Social bookmarks are a great link building idea, but don't rely solely on that... utilize many link building strategies.
Yes, the nofollows are disappointing. But don't overlook the traffic. For example, in the last month I've received 80 unique visitors (over 250 pageloads) from reddit. So for traffic reasons alone, I will continue to submit to social bookmarking sites.
I have only tried digg so far....did not really look into the rest...But this list by seconnection will be very useful. But my concern is that will sites on this list also turn into nofollow sometime later? It seems like a lot of social sites are turning on the nofollow feature after sometime... Cheers TP
As Jim noted social bookmarking is good for not just backlinks but for traffic as well. There are also many social bookmarking sites that use 301 redirects. These are essentially invisible backlinks, because of the 301 redirects. They still help SEO, so don't avoid these.
wow.. tnx for the tips.. another thing, just a clarification, is submitting to low-trafficked directories with nofollow useless or it can still help PR..
There is one thing I'm wondering right now. Since it's fairly easy to get DoFollow links from these social bookmarking sites, do you think Google give them weight?
Furl uses "dofollow". You check the HTML code of a page of Furl yourself. Newly social bookmarking sites usually use "dofollow". Once few of them become famous... from those (the famous), few use the "nofollow". And others still use "dofollow".
Its trickier than you think , some sites that appear to use do-follow links , don't appear as backlinks , so there is something else going on , perhaps harder to spot re-direction URLs , the only real test is if they appear in Yahoo Inlinks directory and as Google backlinks , if they don't then they have little value as PR transmission vehicles -- though targeted traffic and bookmarks( visitors bookmarking your site for later returns ) is another matter -- as already pointed out by many people.
