the backlinks in google update every 2-3 months just before the PR update, so you might need to wait for the next PR update to see results.

And i think you should submit few content in social sites too , if you submit only in directories than your link don't get so importance .

Free directories do not tend to be promoted too much.

Very often, the owner approves everything that is submitted- so there is nothing like quality, and your link can get buried in some deep inner page that may never be crawled.

To find out backlinks, use Yahoo SiteExplorer. Google is a bit secretive of divulging to the public what links that point to a particular website.

The links usually show up around the time of PR updates - so in about 2 - 2.5 months from now

If you are using Google Webmasters it should be showing all the backlinks that you have. Webmasters takes a few weeks to update sometimes though. Before the last PR update one of my sites lost a lot of backlinks in google Webmasters perhaps because a lot of directory pages were removed from the index.

Directories are a waste of time, Google's been devaluing those links for most of the year now.

I definitely agree with the above posts. Don't waste your time on directories, find other better ways to get backlinks. Articles, social-bookmarking, link exchange.

I suggest you only submit your site to the top or high PR directories only. I submitted my site to 1000+ directories, and even after 1 year, I only see 10 or so backlink only, that are coming from directories. So now I only submit to the top directories.

Ensure that the directories are doFollow and of high quality or else your efforts will be in vain.

Really? Website directories don't help much anymore? I spent part of yesterday submitting a site to a few directories, was that a bad idea? Does Google ignore these backlinks or devalue your site for them?

directories can be useful for traffic but generally i find that as backlinks they are very poor. I prfer to post on social bookmarking sites, do follow blogs and forums and engage in link exchanges
