Why does Google give away free lisitngs in the Google Local Map section that competes directly with Google adwords?

Any thoughts? Are they creating the king of all directories and then start charging money to be in it?

No, I think Google does what they do mainly because they want you to use no other service out there. Even if this means that they might compete with themselves sometimes.

I just don't see why anyone would pay for a click when you can be on the map for free. Some clicks like in law are $20 to $50

The local map is about a good a deal ever created. I just think it will stay that way...

If you can get in the local listings it is great....If you are a doing business locally. I get almost the same amount of business from the free listings that I do from PPC.
