I would definitely like to know... Shoot, I really never thought about this either, until now.

I'm thinking about changing my theme to a better looking one - though its not all about looks to rank high in the Search Engines, but its definitely about looks to get a customer to stay and read more.

    Right!

I think it would as some themes have a lot more code and more coding errors than other themes.
Best not go with a themes that has too much BS all over it. Just find a simple and professional looking theme, I think it is your best bet.

Well if it looks like crap, I won't even bother to look at it twice, let alone staying on the site to read or browse more.

Even if the content on the site is good.

It should look decent at least, but code wise you can not do much, except proper use of H1, H2, H3 and so on tags, clean code, W3C valid etc.

Yes the theme matters, when looking to download or even purchase a theme, try to look for "seo friendly" or "optimized for seo" in the theme description. Some themes even have extra meta fields, in the admin area. Some themes have good use of H1, 2, 3, tags, good layout, easy for a bot to go through, site map, and so on. Where as some other themes completely suck lol.

Yes, very much so. All the mordpress approved themes are very good SEOwise. So stick with them.

I'd say relative to content, it doesn't matter very much. What is more important is the way you use the theme and all of the options (be they default, or add-ons) such a url-rewriting, etc. Remember: Search engines can't (as of writing this) read images. All they see is the text, yes, there are some ways to boost up rankings by hyping bold text and the like -- but the search engine doesn't see any of the image or CSS stuff, just go with what's appealing. Any theme can be made "seo optimized" with a little tweaking.
