If you comment on my blog and I see nothing but links, then I would consider your comments as spam. I think that's what happened...

Yup, I think so too, someone marked your comments as spam, now it's being blocked automatically. The thing with blog comments is that you need to contribute to the post rather than see it as a place to get backlinks. If you see an opportunity to add a backlink without spamming, then great. If not, then you should rather not comment but definitely don't spam!

I think that ASKIMET will auto-ban spam commenters. To beat the system you just have to post content relevant to the post.

How to get backlinks from forums and blogs and not be labeled as a spammer

The key there is relevant to the post. Just posting content is NOT enough! If you are using an automated system for comments, then uninstall it. Type in your niche + blog to google, click on the first on, read the blog entry, post something useful to it. When posting, if you can get a link in, that's great...but make sure your link fits within the comment. If you write about SEO but your link is to home repair, that is still spam according to most people.
