Does/Will Google control the internet

Discussion in 'Google' started by William Martin, Feb 11, 2006.

Question: Does Google currently, or will Google in the future, control the internet?
    -------------------

In my opinon, the broad picture is to make Google the first stop for ANYTHING you want to do on the internet. Not forcing you to do it, they can't, but by choice.

They may come closer than anyone else.

But it won't be complete, and it won't be forever.

Google does control the internet... however if they start doing illegal stuff like not indexing without a good reason they will start losing traffic... and popularity.. but as of right now they do because if you violate their rules you are out of the game

Google doesn't control the Internet completely because they do not let themselves. They keep giving in to various governments from around the world on various issues. If governments control the actions of google then it is actually governments that control the web.

Google will never completely control the net, but they will play a large role in its evolution.

Well, this will depend on what you view as control of the internet.
Control over the physical architecture... No
Control over access to the WWW... No
Control over leveraging the largest amount of SE traffic... Yes
Control over being the most popular SE... Yes
Control over trends and new features to online services (GMail etc.)... Yes (at least they lead and the rest follow)

Thank goodness they dont, and never will. They are just a SE, to us in this industry it means alot, but really where were they 20 years ago? Think about 20 years in the future? I highly doubt SE's will even be around for another decade or so, they are just such an primative way of finding things. Who knows what the future holds.

I don't think they are. Also not in the future as there for sure will be someone to be their competitive as they became yahoo's competitive.

The internet is still in its infancy stage (really less than 10 years old), and you are already talking about one company controling it. Google is GOOD at what they do, but let's remember... at one time General Motors was GODD at what they did??

Remember the days when "what's good for GM is good for the country"? Does that apply today, some 50 years later?? Now, they are starving off bankruptcy!!

Ten years ago - had we even heard of Google??

So 50 years from now, no let's say 10 years from now, we will be wondering, "whatever happened to Google"?

    My thoughts...

yes they will do, but like everything else in life they will eventually have some great competition chasing them.

Search engines are just search engines.
Traffic flows 200 other ways too, not just search engines. For example, they can never control what links people click from one page to the other...

Eventually if google gains too much control their might rules and guidelines passed to make sure they don't discriminate in their ranking practices.
