My personal opinion would be to do a video blog and a transcript of what you was saying. Have you seen how SEOmoz do their whiteboard fridays? they always write what was said in the video. This is covering both your angles.
It depends on the niche. If it doesn't have any other video's for the exact keyword you choose many times a youtube video will end up among the top results
I have done this and yes video does work better than articles. You might get articles ranked but videos have more staying power.
I also think that Video's tend to rank well. You can get Fiverr Gigs that will actually turn your article into a video, Ihave done that with several of my articles as a test, and they all ranked well. Video content ranks well if it is organized in a better way. It needs to include suitable description and title with your video as it tells people what your video wants to say. And blog marketing is an idea that can grab a lot traffic also apart from ranks. So its a good idea to have some good videos for your websites.
It'll be best if you do both which is a video content and also a normal content and then you can see the clear cut differences and make a comparison out from there.
It depends if the video is more catchy and people make it viral, video can give more weight in ranking. Same with artcle, if you have unique and catchy write ups, it can be easily rank up.
