Does using a .info domain instead of .com hurt my chances for better seo rankings?

Definitely NOT!. Extension is not important in terms of SEO. It is important with other factors, such as brandability and such, but that is a separate topic and your question is in relation to SEO.

I might use a .info or .biz for a squeeze page but if your going for ranking I would use a .com. I am ranking well for a few of those domains but it was a bit more work.

Also think of it this way. If you are branding are what would a typical non-interenet savvy person use to typing in. They may have seen mysite.info but by default remembered it as mysite.com and your competitor gets the traffic.

I think all is the same however in real life its difficult to tell your friend your domain name or people cant talk or talk wrong about your domain.

I heard that It's not a problem whether using .com and .info. But in reality It's not the same. I use .info and not rank well. while I use .com It ranks very well.
I use the same phrase. Just personal experience.
